how do I get text in a cell to start on the top, wrap within the cell and so on?

Format Menu | Cells
Select alignment tab and check wrap text. K |

See the Format | Cells... Alignment tab's Text control options.

Select the cell(s), click on Format-Cells and the Alignment tab, then check the Wrap text box. To break lines within a cell use Alt-Enter. HTH.
