I want to be able to create random strings of 5 characters eg

fjeuh
dkdto
iwqjk

Is there a standard excel function to do this ? If not, does any one have a UDF which would do this ?

I'm glad you had the dkdto in there:

=CHAR(RANDBETWEEN(97,122))&CHAR(RANDBETWEEN(97,122))&CHAR(RANDBETWEEN(97,122))&CHAR(RANDBETWEEN(97,122))&CHAR(RANDBETWEEN(97,122))

do you need special characters?

I see Mark got there first. I really must learn to type faster

Nice one Mark & Ian - I hadn't thought of doing it that way.

I may want to use "special" characters, I haven't decided yet, but I can work it out from what you've given.
