Can VBA code interact with sheets that are xlveryhidden or do I have to unhide them first?

No, Sheets do not need to be visible to manipulate them.
As far as VBA is concerned, there is no difference between hidden and veryhidden. The only real difference between the two is that veryhidden cannot be UNhidden from the Excel GUI. Veryhidden can only be UNhidden from VBA.
