Data validation limitations?

I'm trying to use the custom data validation criteria "Allow": "Custom" where I can enter a formula. However, I can't enter a formula beyond a specific number of characters. Any suggestions on how to work around this problem.

I'd like to know that too. In the meanwhile, What is the formula that you want to enter in the Custom box?

It's pretty ugly
