Excel file (2000) has increased by a very large amount ( megabytes) on saving.

Does anyone know what may cause this.

Thanks

Try this, it works for me:

Select the empty rows outside your spreadsheet, right down to row 65536 and delete them.

Then save your file and see if it has reduced memory. For me, I have seen this trick reduce file space by around 90% in the past.

Let me know if it works,

Good tip RET79 but be aware this will only work if these cells have issues *some non empty configuration* and now they have been cleaned to look empty.

Let’s see what happens!

Yes, I meant only delete the rows which do not feature in your spreadsheet.

I tend to delete them from row 1000 down to 65536 usually, depends on how big your spreadsheet is.

Hi RET79

I’m fully to speed with you post the idea and theory behind it, I often do the same as a quick fix, but it will only work if the cells have been previously used.

BUT…

ALSO for some bizarre reason this can also have an odd effect on excel and size I agree can drop for little reason, but I did not want to confuse the reader or original poster.

There are many tips tricks to reduce size but we need to go one by one and its pain all the way until we hit the correct fix.

What I will tend to do now if the sheet is small, and can be emailed Ill request it and fix my end and email back, ill up date the post to say what the issue was so all can see.

It’s just a case of feel the problem out.

http://www.appspro.com/downloads/CodeCleaner.exe is an Add-In by Ron Bovey that addresses the bloat.

There seems to be a cleaning add-in that tags along with some Microsoft Resource Kits; I found it on my Office XP CD, but it seems not to work with Office 2002. It's titled Cleaner.XLA, the Properties Summary is "Recreates worksheets, macro sheets and modules."

The reason I haven't had any luck with it may be as simple as a conflict between it and CodeCleaner.

Other ideas on reducing bloat may involve using the Clean() worksheet function, pasting the areas you want to keep into a fresh worksheet and deleting the old sheet. You could also copy and paste your code into fresh modules, and delete the old module, which is exactly what CodeCleaner does.

Most definitely I am NOT an expert on this subject, I just have the same experiences.

Just found this:
XL: Summary of Methods to Recover Data from Corrupted Files (Q142117)

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q142117

And this:

File index
The following table identifies all the self-extracting EXE files in the Office Resource Kit Toolbox, as well as file names for the tools, samples, and documentation that you can install on your computer.

Very god techi ideas to fix a simple file extended on save question, I’m amazed at how we know this is the problem when the original poster has not provide any more information that the original past.

Do we have crystal balls or see on other PC’s???

I’m confused at how we have come to this conclusion and we need to be careful to misdirect the poster / why has requested help.

Add in, if the guys can not solve a heavy sheet size all of a sudden we expect they can down load software correctly utilize the xla and make this add in work and then run the add in successful??

Im not knocking the posters in any direction, but advise techi issue are my home ground and as we say in south London exported on Only Fools and Horses around the world * easy easy catchy monkey*

Translated, slowly we solve the techi issues.

Its not a contest to who knows best? Or who has the greater knowledge.

It’s easy to punch search in to the internet and find results and link ULRs all over this site, but that’s not really helping the poster unless they know how / when and why. The guys can do this himself, yes?

I always check how many posts the guys have made in this case *one*. I would assume correct or incorrectly the guys new and have basic competence so WE all need to show respect and REALLY help this guys simple id3eas and help him.

16 years of techi PC and massive knowledge I’m no expert, have we helped?

I do not think so, I’m not knocking or insulting, making my point clear.
And offering help and support in simple terms.

So Jack, you want to give the guy a step by step on how to solve the problem, or just whine about the suggestions and input from others?

This is a common problem, right? So how about a common plan of action?

No agros just I’m amazed, we know so little, I’m against advice with no evidence that’s all, we can all shine in any field with little data to work on, if you’re with me.

No all help is valid even if its simple don’t think so it routes out factor that factor and pushes along the solving process. Remember negative (constructive negative assistance) is just as valuable right up to the point that the question is solved.

My point was hey … how do we know this??

I did make it very clear Quote>> I do not think so; I’m not knocking or insulting, making my point clear.
And offering help and support in simple terms.

So what else can I do? I’ve not been rude or underhanded in an shape or form what so ever,

Quote>> just whine about the suggestions and input from others?

This puzzles me on the grounds I have not really, just highlighted issue I do not agree with, its good to constructively disagree in a mature fashion, not insult of cause.

Quote> So Jack, you want to give the guy a step by step on how to solve the problem

This is a bit off – as my post explains I can’t until I receive fed back, so I perplexed at this comment.

Answer

Yes I am developing the best fixes I can to many common problems that appear on this board I have my own forum on this site MCSE discussion which I moderate and plan to use this and have the help of others to assist the common problem (such as this) and so we can have steps to run through in help they user get sorted. Also it’s good as they can then incorporate this good house keeping to they daily work. After all it’s all about help.

And yes this will take time to develop and obtain gathering statically incorporated data I require to make the most common issues solvable.

NB I do not state in a guru or that I can solve all question, I can only offer help and but try.

I hope this I ok and please offer feedback. I thank you for your comments and hope you enjoy using this board and continue to do so.

If I did not really care I would not bother in such a lengthy reply and explain to the world my future plan, just so I can t try to help some guys.
