I have an excel file that I was working in. 4+ megs. Suddenly, it became corrupted, I guess because all of a sudden it wont open. All I get is a message box saying unable to open file. Is there any way to recover this as it represents a weeks work. Please dont tell me I should have backed it up, I already know I should have.

Hey,
Have you tried opening the file on another machine? Do you get just that one error? How is it phrased exactly? The 2 I'm familiar with are "File format not valid" and a series of repeating errors ("Cannot open file 'c:my'", "Cannot Open file "documents'" and so forth). Adam |

Ok, Jack first. I tried the shut down and wait thing twice, no luck. I am using XP with Office 2000. At the time it happened, all I did was select a cell, then it went busy, (hour glass). At that point excel was locked up, but I was able to shut down system normal. after comming up, tried to open the file and got the "unable to read file" message box with only and ok responce possible. I also tried renameing the file.
Adam, I have no way to try and open it on another machine. the exact wording of the message is simply a message box that says unable to open file with an ok button, thats it. I am afraid its lost unless someone knows a miricle cure |

OK A very crude fix before I sit and play with some files. Copy the file and paste it exactly where it is. Don’t worry Windows will jump in and say er,,, ERM OK.. that version (2) and it will not over right.
Close excel and go to the excel doc and double click, as we know excel will jump up and open..

Hey again,
Out of curiousity why can't you try another machine? How big is the file when zipped? If you'd like, zip the file and send it to me and I'll see if I can open it. asala42@yahoo.com Good luck! Adam |

Copy Right click the file and see if copy option is there if so click it and right click in that directory away from the files and pate.. The file we be ....(2) and double click that one.. That was the idea. Its late now 1.30AM London ill catch up in the morning, but I have edited a piece I wrote on the subject, I was not going top use it BUT, it was for my Forum. Ill post if for you, will not give fix, until the end, but will give in-depth knowledge on the subject.
