Change row colour when value changes

Hi guys

I have a spreadsheet with thousands of rows.
I want to break the row colour up by the reference in column A.
2 alternating colours is fine. It is only to make the data easier to read and see the groups.
So the reference is repeated in column A over a variable amount of rows. Then a new reference for the next few rows and so on.
I'd like the row colour to change when the reference changes.
I think I have seen it done with a =MOD formula and conditional formatting, but I can't find that now.
Any ideas?

Cheers

Excel Facts

Lock one reference in a formula
Need 1 part of a formula to always point to the same range? use $ signs: $V$2:$Z$99 will always point to V2:Z99, even after copying
Sorry I misunderstood the question. Perhaps a sort of column A so the unique identifiers are in order? Then each group will be in order.

Since they are now sorted will the every other row color change satisfy your need? If so insert the table design. I have used a macro to auto sort a column so it's dynamic but can't remember now. Maybe you can post a different thread on that?

Hi, you can do quite easily with a helper column (which can be hidden of course), for example:

Excel Workbook
AB
1HeaderHelper
2ATRUE
3ATRUE
4ATRUE
5BFALSE
6CTRUE
7CTRUE
8DFALSE
9DFALSE
10ETRUE
11FFALSE
12FFALSE
13FFALSE
14FFALSE
15GTRUE
16HFALSE
17HFALSE
Sheet1
Cells with Conditional Formatting
CellConditionCell FormatStop If True
B21. / Formel ist =$B2Abc

Excellent suggestion FormR! When using the Excel Jeanie how do you post it so it shows the borders?

Hi, it just does for me - if you edit your post that tends to mess it up, but usually the HTML is still on your clipboard at that time, so just delete and re-paste as part of any edits.

I select all and copy the html then paste it. Maybe I am doing this wrong? It shows the range but without borders.
