Q: Is the Total Training DVD Compatible with Vista?
Short answer: Yes, even though Vista reports an error during the install.
Long answer:
During the install process on Vista, Total Training tries to copy a text file to your Program Files directory. This was basically a test to see if you had administrative rights to install. The idea was simple...if Vista allowed the text file to be copied, then the program would install to the Program Files directory for all users. If the copy failed, then the program would be installed to c:\Users\\Documents\TotalTraining\.
I am sure this seemed like a good idea to Total Training. They didn't want to freak everyone out by requiring administrative rights to the computer. (Although, in reality, I probably grant administrative rights on Vista Home Premium a dozen times a week and this would be far less freaky than the "unexpected results" message.
Here is the problem, though. Vista allows a text file to be written without an error. But then, when the installer tried to copy an .exe file to the program files folder, Vista reports "Unexpected result copying M1XL07.exe to C:\Program Files\Total Training\TT Excel 2007 Adv\. [File/folder not copied].
When you encounter this message, simply click OK. The installer then uses the alternate plan and successfully installs the program to your documents folder. In a few moments, you will see that the Training Application was successfully installed.
You will watch the training. Then you exit the training. Finally, Vista notifies you that the program might work better next time with administrator privileges. You can choose "This Program Works Correctly" at this point - since the installer wrote the program to a non-protected location.
Of course, both Total Training and Microsoft are pointing fingers at the other right now. The bottom line...the training does work under Vista.
If either company releases a patch, I will note it here.
