Cumulative totals

I have a spreadsheet that gathers expenses in different categories for each day (i.e. payroll, food, fuel, etc.). Each day a new date is included and the numbers changed for each category. How can I keep track of how much has been entered into each category? This sounds like it needs a cumulative total code solution but I don't know how to approach it.

subtotal function

If you select the range, then data\subtotals & follow the instructions from there.
