Date translation/conversions

I presently download an Access file that is converted to an Excel book. It contains over 100 entries. In each entry is a date shown as yyyymmdd (eg: 19421207). I need excell to recognize these as dates to utilize forumulas in other cells. I presently have to put slash marks (/) between each yyyy/mm/dd and it recognizes them as dates immediately. Is there any way to get Excell to recognize without the slash marks, or to get Excell to put the slash marks in automatically?

You go use text to columns under the data menu.
Highlight your dates, go to data, text to columns
Hit next, and next again. Then click date and YMD from the drop down and finally finish. This could also be achieved by formula if you'd rather go that route.

What's the extension of the data file? .txt?
How are you "converting" it to an Excel workbook?
