locking cells during sorts

Is there a way I can lock some cells together so that I can sort a column of information but keep them next to their corresponding entries? If so, how?

the sort function (data menu)will do this for you. assuming the data you want to sort is in column a and the corresponding entries are in column b, select columns a and b and sort by column a.
