Convert general format to date format

Posted by Shirlene on July 26, 2001 8:41 AM

Someone has thousands of cells formatted as general text and typed in numbers like 19980220. They now want all of these cells converted to date format like 02-20-1998. What is the easiest way to do this? Any help is most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ooops!!! My apologies. The general format is NOT text but number.

Shirlene, use Excel's Data | Text to Columns...
menu command. First, select the values to be
converted. Choose the Text to Columns... command.
Press the [ Next > ] button until you get to
Step 3 of 3. Choose "YMD" date format, and
press [ Finish ]. Finally, apply your desired
date format.
