unable to access file when updating links

I have a summary report that is linked to many Excel files and every once in awhile, when I have it update the links, Excel gives me a message box that says:

"Unable to Access filename.xls"

Where filename is obviously the name of the file causing the problem. Each time I've get this error, the file IS where it belongs and the link IS to that location, so I guess my questions are 1) does anyone have ideas as to what is causing this (occurrences have been random -- no pattern) and 2) is this a quirk in Excel?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Jennifer

Are you on a network ? It sounds like your workbook has links to a file your network administrator has not given you access to. If it were password protected you would be prompted for the password.

Yes I am on a network, and I have already spoken with the administrator. Access to the files has been properly set. It is not a network nor a password problem. I honestly believe it is something within Excel. As I said in the original posting, this error occurs at random and when it does occur, the files ARE in the correct place and I have access to them. Thanks.
