if i have the following text:
alan 033
and i do a text to column on it, i always lose the 0, even if the column is preformatted with "text" Any way around this?

Not simply. Not without reformatting the column, i.e., Format-Cells, Custom and type in 000000 for a six-digit account number, or choose Special and zip code for a zip code.

Not so...

Apply the "Text" Column data format to the column
containing 033 (at Step 3 of 3 of the Text to
Column wizard) BEFORE you press the [ Finish ]
button.

33 (formatted as 000) isn't the same as "033" [nt]
