TOO MANY FORMATS

One of my co-workers is having a problem with a workbook in Excel. When he attempts to change the formatting in a cell, he get the error message: "Too many different cell formats."

The workbook has @ 6,000 rows of information and does have different formats throughout but I have never encounter this error and do not know how to help him.

ANY ADVICE???

Choose the Format | Cells... menu command. Pick
the Custom category and scroll the the bottom of
format list and start deleting user added formats
that are not needed.
