Exhibiting system TIME on a spreadsheet using the TIME Function.

Could you explain a little further please,
Where/How do your messages come in?
by "when the cell is activated" what do you mean?
and what is THE cell or is it many?

I am working on a messaging spreadsheet where time must be displayed quickly into a column as messages come in. Time is of essence so there will not be enough time to look at the clock and key in the time in military format. How do I get the time to display when the cell is activated each time a message comes through? :

We are a security company and my office is in charge of monitoring building complexes nationwide with cameras and field officer. This has never been automated before and is still being done manually. The officers call in messages on a 24 hour basis and we must enter these messages into a spreadsheet using codes and abreviations. Each message must be timed and dated. Messages can be used legally in court. The spreadsheet which I have already disigned except for the "time" column has a column on the leftmost side which is headed as "TIME: and all cells under that heading are formatted with the military time format (hh:mm:ss). I am sure I have seen the time from the computer system automatically displayed into the cells in a similar requirement. I think this is accomplished by embedding the "time" function in each of the cells under the "TIME" column then protecting the cells. The time will be brought into each cell at message time by pointing the cursor on that cell and then pressing "enter". I do not know how to store the "time" function in the cells and make this happen. I have stored functions in cells for arithmatic use but never for time.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions you have.
