=SUM(HOUR(A4),MINUTE(A4)/60,SECOND(A4)/3600)

I am using the above formula in a cell. The a4 cell
contains the following: 15656:30:00 in a custom format
[h]:mm:ss

I keep getting a #value in A1(where the formula is.
any reason why??

the problem appears to be in the 15656:30:00 format

Sorry I can't be of more help. Your formula works with ordinary time formats (and, in fact, with the custom format you're using, so long as the time conforms to a standard format- e.g 24 hour or 12hour AM PM). In fact all of the individual formulas, =hour, =minute, and =second give the #value error on your 15656:30:00 data. What does 15656 represent?
