Vlookup identifying 1st character only

I have Excel 97 and I am using Vlookup to return data from a simple 2 column table. Problem is I have col 1 entries such as 1800, 1800 soak, 1800 liner. They are all different things but vlookup picks the lowest 2nd col value which is for 1800. Why is it looking at the 1st character only?

Sounds like you need to set "RangeLookup" of the VLOOKUP formula to False. Have a look in the Help file for explanation.
