Auto Filter inhibited when worksheet protected

Hi all, When I protect a worksheet, it disables the Auto Filter. Is there any way to stop it doing this?

I've tried unlocking the relevant cells but no joy. I need to protect certain columns to stop people manually entering data where they shouldn't but they need to be able to use the auto filter on these columns.

I'm using Excel 2000 by the way.

You can't use AutoFilter's dropdown lists when
the worksheet is protected; however, you can
use Advanced AutoFilters since they aren't
reliant on dropdown lists for their criteria.
