Excel automatically opens files at startup -- please make it stop!

Whenever I open Excel ('97), the program opens a bunch (like 8) files automatically. How can I make this stop?

I looked through other posts and did not find anything about this. Thank you in advance.

Choose the Tools | Options... menu commmand. Click
on the "General" tab. Is there an "Alternate
startup file location" specified? If so, (and
it includes your 8 files) you may want to clear
the contents of this field! Otherwise, check
to see if these 8 files are in your XLStart folder.
If so, remove them!
