2 dates subtraction showing a word if less than 40 days

Hi - what is wrong with this? If i don't use the subtraction the formula works fine - So I am guessing you can't use the formula like I want to and needs to be adjusted?

D4 and E4 are 2 dates.

=if((D4-E4)<40,"yes","no")

Forgot me - I have no Idea but when i copied it back into Excel from writing it about it worked!!!!
