Has anybody got an idea why a R1C1 referecne wouldfail.

I am referencing cells w16:w30 they contain data but the =sum(w16:w30) fails to notice any of the data in the cell

Last used cell?
Press Ctrl+End to move to what Excel thinks is the last used cell.

Shouldn't a RC reference look like =sum(R10C2:R30C2) ?

Does this problem appear on the same sheet as your macro problem?

If you look at the numbers in the cell and they are left justified... Excel thinks they are text and not numbers. There are several ways to "fix" the column. If they are used in a calculation you can do something like:

Changing this:
=IF(P16="st",E16,0)
To:
=IF(P16="st",E16+0,0)

This "+0" convinces Excel it is a numeric field.

Hope this helps.
