I have devised a table where in a particular field you have to choose the staff name. This is done by drop down menu that lookup the list of staff names on another table.

I have devised a query that that on opening, asks the user to input the staff name [which staff name].

My question is - is there a way that on opening the query I can have a drop down list when enetering the staff name? Of course I have a table that the query would point to!

You can't have a drop down list direct in a query, what you can do is use a form and add a combo box that will give you a list of your staff from your table, then when they select from the drop down add a command button to run the query.

So your query would have its criteria point to the combobox on a form.
