Hi there,

We are trying to make a spreadsheet invoice that adds on a 3% charge to the total of our invoice for visa transactions.

The thing is when the 3% is taken off it needs to = the original total.

In advance thanks a heap,

Tim

Excel Facts

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.
Hi
if a1 has invoice number,
B1=A1*1.03 will give added(3%) surcharge
c1 = B1/1.03 return the original invoice value
I don't see where you are getting the problem

Hi for some reason i dont quite agree with your answer but am not 100% sure why - what you say works yet if you take say $1500 * 1.03

You have $1545

Now if you times by .03 (this is to give you 3%)

Then minus that total from the $1545 you are left with $1498.65 not $1500

I dont think it is quite as simple as you say but really appreciate your time!

To clarify i need to find how to find the number that when taking 3% off brings me back to my original number.

In practise this is what happens.

For each visa transaction we take in our business we get charged 3% for customers who want to use this facility we charge them the 3% so if the item retailed at $1500 then we need to find what number we need to charge them so that when 3% is taken from it we are left with the original value of $1500

Again in advance thank you all for your amazing help!

3% of 1500 is 45
3% of 1545 is not 45.

You cannot add 3% to the ticket value (1500 + 45) and take 3% off the marked-up value (1545 - 46.35) and arrive at the same number.

Resolving this is a pricing issue, not a mathematical one.
