My destination cell is U9. Users have an option to place an x in P9, Q9, R9 and/or S9. The can select as many or as few as they wish. If they place an x in P9 I want the value in U9 to include the value in D10. If there is an x in Q9, include/add the value in G10. If there is an x in R9, include/add the value in J10. If there is an x n M9, include/add the value in N10.

Thanks in advance

You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
See if this works for you:

=SUMPRODUCT(--(P9:S9="x"),CHOOSE({1,2,3,4},D10,G10,J10,N10))
