Adding even if text is also in cell?

Can excel add a column even if there is some text relating to the number entry in some of the cells? Some individuals are putting text describing their hours on a time log. The formula ends up with a value error. Help

yes you can, but not adding numbers with text in the same cell

why not put a comments field so they can put hours in one field and text in adjacent cells

edit: you might want to put a text validation on the field for time to force that only numbers are used
