Adding formats to a formula

Is it possible to add a format to a formula such as
Code:
IF(A1=1,(red)true,IF(A1=2,(blue),""))

I have attempted to do this with no luck so far.

Ctrl+1 (the number one) will open the Format dialog for whatever is selected.
Thanks for this, but I understand conditional formatting. I am looking to set the format based on eight different conditions; conditional formatting is limited to three.

Sorry I did not mention this in the original post.
