addition of text

hi guys i have a sheet that has types of meals being served and i need each cell to be regarded as a value of one so that i can add all the entries. in essence i want to know how many entries there are in one column where the entries are text.

You can use COUNTA() to count text occurrences.

I.E. =COUNTA(A1:A2)
