adjusting range based upon date

I am trying to get excel to change the range of a simple sum function based upon what date it reads in A1. Any easy way to do this?

although now im curious, can I have formatting in one cell change based on the value of another?

Yes, on the formatting. Use 'conditional formating' from the format window. The available formats are limited but you can get different color font and color, patterns, and borders.
