What is the formula for filtering a column or columns using Advanced Filter so the cells are filtered alphabetically in ascending order. I find examples on the net but all are for specific numerical criteria or for specific text criteria. I need the column filtered so all records appear in alpha order in ascending order. Thank you in advance for any reply.

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
Do you want to filter or do you want to sort the column ?

Thank you for the reply. I want to filter the records in alpha order in four columns. After the filter I want to edit the records which should all be more or less aligned in alpha order and after the editing I want to essentially undo the filtering so all the records go back to their original place. Of course the undo part is done via the Show All in > Data > Filter.

I did not save the search string on my google search it was several hours ago. I believe I searched under terms like excel, advanced filter, ascending.

Thanks again for the reply.

Internet Explorer has a history where you can find the google search strings...

Hi fairwinds, how's the dogpile? :)

I want to filter because after filtering I can put all four columns back in the same order they are in now. To be more explicit, I have columns with blanks that need to be ignored and then have the data organized in the column in alpha order. I need the columns in alpha order so I can visually compare the data in the columns and make manual editing changes in the various columns. After the editing, I need to put the columns back in their original order. Filtering is temporary and sorting is permanent in terms of editing and then trying to unsort.

If I use autosort, the only data I see on the sheet is the accompanying data pulled up. I need to see the hidden rows as well as the sorted rows so I can make editing changes in all of them.
