Advanced filter unique values

Hi folks. I've had a trawl through previous posts, but haven't found a question the same as mine yet (Nobody else as dumb as me. seemingly). I'm probably being thick, but if I don't ask, I'll never know. I am trying to use advanced filter to sort a single column for unique values, the problem I'm having is that if the values in the two topmost cells are the same, it does not filter them, i still get both in my filtered column. eg Column A has 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5 from cell A1 to A10 if I advance filter into C1 to C10 for unique values I get 1,1,2,3,4,5. What am I doing wrong? Not much hair left now, by the way, so any help would be greatly appreciated by my 'stylist'.

Excel Facts

Wildcard in VLOOKUP
Use =VLOOKUP("Apple*" to find apple, Apple, or applesauce
That's because it's treating the first cell as a column label. Enter a label in A1, list your data below it, and then use Advanced Filter...
