Advanced MODE function

Hi guys

I need some help with a formula and not sure how to tackle it.

In the below set of data I need another column that will pick out the most common pricing for each product type and put that price against each line

ie if i start with

Product Price

Product1 25
Product1 25
Product2 27
Product3 28
Product4 29
Product1 23
Product1 24
Product2 27
Product2 28


I want to end with

Product Price Mode

Product1 25 25
Product1 25 25
Product2 27 27
Product3 28 28
Product4 29 29
Product1 23 25
Product1 24 25
Product2 27 27
Product2 28 27

Any ideas ?

Dunno if this is the easiest method, but:

=IF(COUNTIF($A$2:$A$10,A2)=1,B2,MODE(IF($A$2:$A$10=A2,$B$2:$B$10)))

which should be confirmed with ctrl+shift+enter.

It's an array formula and should appear in the cell surrounded by curly brackets.

Of course you'll have to amend your ranges to suit. Column A contains the product names and column B contains the values.

To get round the single instance issue you could also use this version

=MODE(IF($A$2:$A$10=A2,$B$2:$B$10*{1,1}))

the {1,1} part means that B2:B10 is converted to a two column array with repeated values - this prevents MODE returning #N/A which is what normally happens when there are no repeated values (e.g) where one product has only a single line.

Jason also makes a good point - if there is a tie for the modal value then the result given by MODE will simply be the first of those that appears, so in his example that would be 24.....that may not be the result you need

I was heading in the direction of an IF formula but got stuck.

(The brackets are what I would like the formula to do.)

I was going to try =IF(A2=A1,[COUNT B2])

This won't work because I need to link the Product and Mode together before I can get a count.

My ultimate goal is to figure out how consistent the mode value is within each product line. For example the mode is 50% consistent for Product 1 and 66% consistent for Product 2.

Any suggestions?

I was heading in the direction of an IF formula but got stuck.

(The brackets are what I would like the formula to do.)

I was going to try =IF(A2=A1,[COUNT B2])

This won't work because I need to link the Product and Mode together before I can get a count.

My ultimate goal is to figure out how consistent the mode value is within each product line. For example the mode is 50% consistent for Product 1 and 66% consistent for Product 2.

Any suggestions?
