Aligning zeroes and negatives issues

Hi all,

I'm attempting to format a list of totals using the number format of:
"_( $* #,##0.00 _);_( -$* #,##0.00 ;_( $* #,##0.00 " <-- the gaps are all 9 spaces except in front of the minus sign where there's 8

I honestly am not sure what the heck's going on with Number Formats at the best of times but I'm trying to align the dollars signs and the decimal points.

Sometimes the zeroes show and sometimes they don't.

And the minus sign throws things out too.

Please help!

The attached image shows the numbers and their misalignments. In the image both the negative and zero values share the same alignment as each other but they are different than the rest.

The blank cell is a zero but so is the cell above it and they both have the same format.

The Currency format does fix the issue but I would like to move the dollar sign in from the edge of the column, align the values by their decimal points, and centre everything from dollar sign to second decimal point.

The number format I copied lost all of its spaces but I'll try again below:
<customformat>_( $* #,##0.00 _);_( -$* #,##0.00 ;_( $* #,##0.00 </customformat>

My problem is that I don't understand why the zeroes and negatives do not align.
