when I click on a cell it shows '12345 in the formula bar but only the number in the cell. I am trying to compare to columns to see if they are equal. The result is false and I believe the apostrophe may be the reason. How can I remove this apostrophe from several thousand rows?

Excel Facts

Ambidextrous Undo
Undo last command with Ctrl+Z or Alt+Backspace. If you use the Undo icon in the QAT, open the drop-down arrow to undo up to 100 steps.
If they are all numeric entries that you are trying to remove the "text qualifier" (apostrophe) from, simply highlight the column, change the format to General or Numeric, select Text to Columns from the Data menu, and click Finish.

If this is in column A for example, press Alt+F11, then Ctrl+G, and type this into what is known as the Immediate Window and press Enter:
Columns(1).Value = Columns(1).Value

Then press Alt+Q and the apostrophes will be gone.

Modify for column. If the apostrophes are in a bunch of places, then select that range and you'd enter
Selection.Value = Selection.Value

In the latter case make sure you are not selecting cells with formulas ! Selecting that range with constants only would be via selecting the range, then click Edit > GoTo > Special > Constants > OK
and then follow the steps as outlined above to get to the Immediate Window.
