Apply Names fails if named range is in another sheet..

Hi,
I had the promising idea of simplifying the review of a complex Excel workbook by creating names for most of the cells used in the formulas. However it turns out that if the named range refers to a cell in another worksheet, when I try to update the cell ref with the newly created named range, Excel says it "Cannot find any reference to replace"...
Example:
Sheet1!A1= Sheet2!A1
I created named range myrange123 that refers to Sheet2!A1. When I select Sheet1!A1 and try to Apply names for myrange123, it gives the error message.
Any way to solve this problem apart from creating a macro to manually evaluate each cell for each Name and replace the ref with the name?
Thanks!
