Applying formulas to horizontal data

When data is entered in to a worksheet vertically, it is very easy to apply a formula to this data in the column next to it and scroll down to copy the formula. But when the data is across the cells horizontally, is there any way to flip the axis to get that data on a vertical axis or get a a formula like =counta() to work on horizontal data without having to repaste most of the formula in each cell?

You can transpose copied data to switch the axis.

Highlight your horizontal row and hit copy. Right click your destination and choose paste special. Check off the "transpose" box on the bottom and your data will be flipped.
