So, I was trying to use an array formula like used in the tip posted on this site. http://www.mrexcel.com/tip011.shtml

My need is a little more complicated. In the example,
sum(a2:a10*b2:b10) added the products of each respective row, using the CSE or array function.

In my case, I would like to do this, but have different categories, and would therefore like to use a sumif instead of a sum. Is this possible

Does the VLOOKUP table have to be sorted?
No! when you are using an exact match, the VLOOKUP table can be in any order. Best-selling items at the top is actually the best.
SUMIF will probably not work. To do what you wish, a common approach would be to use SUMPRODUCT, or an array-entered SUM(...) function call. Please provide more details so that a good answer can be offered.

Why don't you describe in full the problem you want to solve?
