I have a data sheet with a series of dates in the first column, error types in the next column and minutes taken to resolve the error in the last.
I want to get a total of time taken for each error type for any given date, can I use an array formula to do this and if so can somebody give me a headstart as to how as I am getting nowhere fast.

Date: error type: minutes taken to resolve

want end up selecting a date and a error type and having a total time lost for that error on that date.

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
Here is a normal (non-array) formula:

=SUMPRODUCT(--(A2:A10=DATEVALUE("11/10/2006")),--(B2:B10=1),C2:C10)

Adjust the ranges to suit, but they must all have the same number of rows and can't be entire columns. You can use cell references for the tests DATEVALUE("11/10/2006") and 1.
