<, >, < >, <=, >=, = As variables?

Is it possible to assign these E1 drop down values to the variable x and use in the little test code here?
It seems NOT as the red line errors out.

Range("A1:A5") = 1 ,2 ,3 ,4, 5
Drop down in D1 is choice of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Drop down in E1 is choice of <, >, < >, <=, >=, =

Sub VTest()
Dim c As Range
Dim d As Long
Dim x As String

d = Range("D1").Value
x = Range("E1").Value

For Each c In Range("A1:A5")
 If c.Value x d Then
  c.Offset(0, 1).Value = c

If Evaluate( c.Value & x & d) Then
