Auditing Tools

I use the auditing tools daily to trace dependents and precedents. I recently inherited a spreadsheet from someone else. In this spreadsheet, the auditing tool buttons only show up on selected cells. On many of the cells that definately have precedents or dependants, the auditing tool buttons are grayed-out and cannot be accessed. Any ideas why this might be happening? Any suggestion on allowing the audition tools to work on all cells?
