Hey everyone, how ya going ?

Question here, not sure there is an answer.

My friend just called me up and says "been working on excel all day", pc crashed and I have lost all my work", he does not have auto save on.

However does excel store a backup without being told ?

I don't think it does, but maybe some of you super clues will be able to help.

Thanks in advance.

Show numbers in thousands?
Use a custom number format of #,##0,K. Each comma after the final 0 will divide the displayed number by another thousand
Hello there - ain't seen you for a while!

I think your friend may be ****ed - what version of xl are they using? I've got xl2k2 and there's an autorecover option every x minutes under Tools>Options - Save tab.

Your mate not heard of saving and backing up? The fool!

Yeah I'm not bad, speedy responses as ever on here.

Yeah I think he is screwed also. I have xl xp and I have the same option as you. Under options 13 seperate tabs. He is using 2000 which only has 8 tabs apparently. If he did have autosave on is there a default location where it sends the files to ?

Cheers

May be worth checking either C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp or C:\WINDOWS\Temp perhaps?

Edit: on my pc the autorecover info is saved to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\ - anything like that in xl2k?

Have not got a clue, stuff him, diverted far to much of my time to helping someone who works for 9 hours and does not hit save.

Cheers for the help

On another note I see we both joined this board on the same day.

Nice to see Iridium's got a friend! :devilish:

If he did File-->Save As-->Tools-->General Options-->Always Create Backup at any point in this file's life, then the .xlk backup file will be in the same folder as the original. (But if he didn't save it in the first place he's fubar'd anyway...)

That's spooky!

As for your "mate" I agree with you:

Why bother?

See you around - come back soon!
