auto hightlight text

Hi everyone,

Greetings. Wondering if there is a way to highlight keywords that i want automatically in excel?

Currently I have some comment files and I would like to highlight some keywords in different color to spot for some trends.

For example, I would like to have the word "noise", "wait", "delay" or maybe more in green, yellow, and red.

How do I do that? Or if you have better suggestions to spot for trend that is even more fabulous!

Please educate.

Hi there, welcome to the board!

I think you want to check out Conditional Formatting found under the Format menu. You can specify how you want cell(s) formatted (ie color, border, font, bold, italic, etc) if they meet a certain condition, maybe like having a certain word in it.

I tried the conditional formatting but it only happens if I have just one word in the cell.

My cells now contains phrases.

Say:

Cell A2 contains words "There is no delay"
Cell A3 contains words "We had to wait for long time to be discharged"
Cell A4 contains words "Somebody needs to explain why we are waiting"
Cell A5 contains words "No wait! Very quick!"

I would like to highlight the word "wait"

but the conditional formatting will not highlight any of the word "wait"
as they are in string / phrases.

It will change the format if the cell contains just the word "wait". No other words with it.

That's the part I have no idea how to make it happens. Am I missing something?

Hi,

With conditional formatting, you can use the "Formula is" option and the formula:

=ISNUMBER(SEARCH("delay",A1))

to search for a specific word in a sentence. However the whole cell will be highlighted, not just the individual word.

The only way you will be able to highlight individual words in a cell would be using VBA.

Eh, well if you want help with VBA you could start here.

I'm just off out the door so don't have time to post any code but I'll take a look later.

It might help if you can tell us the range(s) you want to look for these words.

I have a few sheets, different sheet has different range.

Let's just say, range E13: E 41

They all start with E13.

I can manage to change the range later in vba if needed, I think. I guess it shouldn't be hard to change the range?!
