Auto numbering with criteria

how to break out following problem this below :

col.a (after formula) -- s	data
1	john
1	john
2	mike
3	sarah
3	sarah

<tbody>
</tbody>

any assistance, will be appreciated..

I'm sure there is a simpler way, but try this formula:

=IF(ISTEXT(A1),1,IF(B2<>B1,A1+1,A1))

hi Ben, thanks you, it worked, but i have any other problem, in col.a1 the data is number e.g. 1 , not text..any idea?

=IF(B1="Data","1",IF(B2<>B1,TEXT(A1+1,"?"),A1))

Put formula in A2 (your data in B2 and down):

=IF(COUNTIF($B$2:B2,B2)>1,A1,MAX($A$1:A1)+1)

or

=IF(COUNTIF($B$2:B2,B2)>1,A1,A1+1)
