(How) Can you auto outline pivot tables? I'm using Excel 2003. I want to send the information to non-excel experts and need them to be able easily to view it at different levels. I know that to auto outline you really need a formula at the bottom of some rows of data. Pivot tables don't have formulas, but excel must know where the totals rows are as it creates them. Using the standard Data/Group and outline/Auto outline with either the whole table or selected rows gives me a "Cannot create an outline" message. Is there an easy way to do it?

Thanks

Auto outline pivot tables

I'm using Excel 2016. Any help will be much appreciated!

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
Double clicking on the ROW Labels will Expand or Collapse that section.
Right Clicking a Label allows options for that for all items at that level.
You can record the process using Screen capture in PowerPoint to educate the end-user.

Outlining doesn't apply to a Pivot Table. The Outline function is applied at the Sheet level, sheet Rows and Columns.
A Pivot Table has Outlining built in.

Additionally, a Pivot Table could change shape depending on Filter/Slicer/Data which would invalidate the Outline structure at the Rows or Columns.
