Auto populate staff #'s

I am building a form where one of the columns will have a name and the next will have that persons ID #. I would like to enter the name and have the ID # fill in automaticlly.

I have data validation set so that only the names off the list can be entered, but cant figure out how to get the next column to auto populate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

But now there is #N/A in all the rows with no entries. Is there an edit to the formula that will leave the cell blank if there is no entry?

What version of Excel are you using?

If you're using Excel 2007 or later:

=IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A1,edmd,2,0),"")

This one will work in ANY version of Excel:

=IF(COUNTIF(INDEX(edmd,,1),A1),VLOOKUP(A1,edmd,2,0),"")
