I've seen this question a lot but not an answer that works for me.

All of a sudden, auto fill has stopped working.

I've put A in one cell and B in the next, tried selecting both and dragging down and just the B and dragging down and tried with and without the cntrl key. I just can't get it to carry on C, D, E etc.

I've opened and closed excel
I tried on a new worksheet in a new workbook
I checked that drag and fill is selected in options
I have no hidden rows/columns
I have no filter set.

It usually works OK... what on earth is going on?

Excel Facts

What is the last column in Excel?
Excel columns run from A to Z, AA to AZ, AAA to XFD. The last column is XFD.
Do you have a custom list on that computer that lists A-Z?

If not, it would just give a sequence like ABABABABBABABABABBABA except I dont get your question

Have I been thick? I could have sworn in the past I've auto filled letters. Where do I check the custom lists?

btw, I've checked weekdays and numbers and they work ok

draag down normally as far as required

It's either my formula or a Custom List....if you're going to do it often, I'd create the list...(y)

i will now ! I think maybe I did once in the past which is why I could remember doing it. Where is the custom list function?

In 2007 or higher
File>>Options>>Advanced>>scrolldown to General>>edit custom lists

In 2003, I think it's Insert>>list

I am adding a note here for those like me that came looking for a solution. In my case, I am using O365. After trying all the tricks, it finally occurred to me that I was working with a Filtered list. After I unfiltered, and sorted the items so that the items were in the order to be AutoFilled, I then selected the start cell and selected to cells beneath. The Autofill menu appeared with the options not greyed out.
