I am using Excel 2000. I have AutoFilter on.
I click on the column Autofilter dropdown box and choose custom. I click on custom autofilter and the box pops up. If I choose the "equals" range, then Put in what I am looking for, It works fine.

If I choose "Contains" as the range, then it dosen't work correctly.

My data consits of some cells with 6 digit numerals but some other cells have Letters and numbers together.

example. 616486
616487
616488
TN6486
TN6487

If I choose Custom Autofilter/ and
files that are "Equal" to 616486;
It pulls up 616486

If I choose Custom Autofilter/
files that "Contain" 486;
It pulls up TN6486 but not 616486

I don't understand why It finds the ones with Alpha characters in front of numerals but not the ones that have numerals only.

Please help!

Thanks in Advance.

Todd

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
Consult the last Notes bullet in the Excel Help topic for "Types of comparison criteria".

BTW, it best to have 1 data type in a data list column. Rule of thumb -- if you're not gonna add it make it text... e.g., SSN, credit card, and phone numbers.
