I have the following list of home prices. How do I find which homes fall in the top 5/7/or 10 percent using good old math. I know how to find the answer using Excel tools, but I need the math to explain how it works.

Excel Facts

Repeat Last Command
Pressing F4 adds dollar signs when editing a formula. When not editing, F4 repeats last command.
See if this makes sense:

In your example you have 24 houses.

10 percent of the houses = 2.4=(.1*24).

You would have to drop the fractional part of
the answer (in this case .4) and say that 10
percent of your houses equals 2.

Look at the sales price of the top two houses.
Any house that is greater than or equal to the lower of these two prices qualifies as being in the top 10 percent.
