Average function

Hello.
Hope you can be of assistance. I am trying to obtain an average based on a multiple argument. In column I, i have 3 criteria of persons who have taken a test, broken down into completer, non completer and assessed. For their test scores (column AN) some have scores, some do not (blank, but are still considered a 'completer'). I am trying to average the scores of who are completers, then non completer, then assessed. The problem is the average takes into account the number of cases and includes the blank cells! Please help. If have tried the following formula, but it still counts the blank cells in column AN:

=SUMIF(I4:I1248,"completer",AN4:AN1248)/MAX(1,COUNTIF(I4:I1248,"completer"))

=AVERAGE(IF(I4:I1248="completer",IF(ISNUMBER(AN4:AN1248),AN4:AN1248)))

which you need to confirm with control+shift+enter, not just with enter.
