Help! I need to average a series of times (shown in hours minutes) to show the average number of hours I work each month. So week 1 might be 42 h:21mins, week 2 might be 40h:56min and so on, but how can I calculate my average weekly work times.

Excel Facts

What is the shortcut key for Format Selection?
Ctrl+1 (the number one) will open the Format dialog for whatever is selected.

If your hours are shown as fractions: 42.35. 40.92 etc you could use the AVERAGE function.

I've tried that thanks, but convberting to fractions is a chore.

What if you use
=AVERAGE(A1:A2)*24
as your formula and apply custom format of
# ?/60
This results in 41 38/60. Is this what you want?

What is the data type of your data (i.e., numeric datetime value or text)? What formatting is applied to the cells containing these values?

Hi. I input 40.25 for example and leave the format as General. Do you think I should input the data another way?

Why not input it as 40:25? Excel expects times to be entered using the time seperator specified in your Regional settings control panel. Usually, this is set to colon :)).
